Tucked behind the main house at Wynell Road, the Garden Room is a compact timber-framed studio, self-built by Bricolage director Will Howard as a space for work, retreat and quiet connection with the garden. Set low amongst planting, it presents a simple form clad in black corrugated sheeting, offering a crisp, contemporary counterpoint to its leafy surroundings.

The structure is made from stud framing and wood-fibre insulation, built using found and low-carbon materials and hands-on techniques. Reclaimed timbers and a discarded Victorian bay window were reworked to form the primary façade, bringing rhythm and generosity to the compact building while maximising use of salvaged materials.

Inside, the space is warm and bright, with ample natural light and views back towards the house. Cork flooring is soft underfoot, and very forgiving when moving in and out of the garden. A wrap around curtain allows the space to be transformed into a private and secluded place to rest. A composting WC, sink and storage area are discreetly integrated behind a full-height sliding cork-panel door.

Built slowly, with care and immediacy, the Garden Room is a small-scale proposition for a low-impact building - made simply with materials that were to hand.
